Things I Like To Do Outside of Science

Travel

One of my favorite things to do is to travel. I love to see new places and experience other cultures. I am lucky that my work as a biologist has taken me all over the world, both for fieldwork as well as to participate in scientific meetings. I am also lucky that I have been able to travel to many of these places with my wife and son.

Hiking

When my son was six we were conducting fieldwork near Elk  Garden in VA and he saw a group of boy scouts hiking with packs. He asked me about what they were doing and when I explained to him that they were backpacking he asked if we could do that someday. A couple of years later when he was eleven we started section hiking the Appalachian Trail with the goal of completing the southern half.

Rock & Roll

Other than fieldwork, one of my favorite things to do when traveling is to visit record stores. I am a huge rock & roll fan and I have a collection of >5000 records and CD's. For my favorite bands, I try to collect all of their released material and this means tracking down UK singles, bonus tracks from Japanese releases, flexi's, radio station charity compilations and magazine cover CD's.

Gardening

Each year I plant a garden where I grow fruits and vegetables. Summertime at our house means fresh salsa, bruschetta, zucchini noodles and watermelon.

Star Wars

As a kid in the 70's and 80's I grew up with Star Wars. I still love to visit galaxies far, far away. I collect various Star Wars memorabilia, particularly Lego's and other toys.
